The original, oil on canvas 87.5 x 72.5 cm, is in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (A.Blankert, Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680)ÿ Rembrandt's Pupil, 1982, p.144, no 143). In Stohl's time the portrait was still held to be painted by Rembrandt, depicting his own physiognomy or that of his pupil Govert Flinck. Since the end of the 19th century scholars have attributed the painting almost anonymously to Bol who might have painted it during his apprenticeship in Rembrandt's studio in the 1640s, given the affinities with the famous self portrait in the National Gallery, London of 1640.
