Lot Essay

John, 1st Earl of Kintore (d.1714) played a crucial role when only a child in preventing the Scottish regalia from falling into the hands of English soldiers during the siege of Dunnottar Castle in the winter of 1651. In return for this, Keith was appointed Knight Marischal of Scotland at the Restoration.
Keith was created Earl of Kintore and Lord Keith of Inverurie and Keith Hall on 26 June 1677 and from this time was politically active as both privy councillor and in parliament.

John, 1st Earl of Kintore and Knight Marischal was the youngest son of William Keith, 5th Earl Marischal (c.1585-1635).
