Lot Essay

The original, on canvas, signed, 68 x 58 cm, is in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin, since 1815 (K.Braun, Alle tot nu toe bekende schilderijen van Jan Steen, 1980, p.106, no 152). The tavern has for a long time mistakenly been identified as that owned by Jan Steen on the Langebrug in Leiden, as the original is to be dated to circa 1661-1663 and Jan Steen did not own his tavern until 1670 (see Jan Steen, Schilder en Verteller, exhibition catalogue Rijksmusem Amsterdam 1996-1997, pp.154-156, No17, with ill.).
