THIRD QUARTER 18TH CENTURY
The twin-flap crossbanded top centred by a pearled oval enclosing a scene en grisaille of Venus and Cupid in a rocky setting, the corners with foliate arabesques, above a mahogany-lined frieze drawer, on square tapering legs headed by flowerheads and ribbon-tied garlands of diminishing husks, with brass caps and castors, the underside of the drawer stamped '551/14', the metalwork apparently original, the decoration restored, the underside with batten-carrying holes

Alfred Stern was almost certainly a collector in the 1920s and 1930s. In the 1960 sale at Christie's referred to above, several of the lots from his collection had been illustrated in the various volumes of Old English Furniture and Works of Art, produced by Moss Harris and Sons in the 1920s.
