Lot Essay
This window-pier 'commode table', with its geometric elliptic form and 'Roman' medallion-inlaid tablets, reflects the George III 'antique' manner popularised by The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam (1773). Its 'poetic' ornament of a Palmyreen sunflower with laurelled sacred urns, appropriate to Robert Adam's 'columbarium' or vase-chamber fashion, can be found on a 1784 pier-table pattern in the Gillow archives (see L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig.9).
