Lot Essay
This commode closely relates to a George III harewood and sycamore ormolu-mounted marquetry commode, circa 1775, in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, discussed by Lucy Wood (op. cit., No. 18, pp. 171-175). Both commodes share an identical and unusual curvilinear shape and a distinctive marquetry style. Lucy Wood discusses these commodes and other furniture sharing similar characteristics, which almost certainly originated from the same workshop, including two commodes, one sold anonymously, Sotheby's, 16 November 1984, lot 156 and another sold at Boardman's of Haverhill, the Town Hall, Clare, Suffolk, 17 May 1989, lot 217 (op. cit., figs. 164 & 161 respectively), both of which were constructed with hinged tops like the current lot. Another part of this group is a George III ormolu-mounted sycamore, satinwood and marquetry pier table, offered anonymously, Christie's, London, 22 January 2009, lot 56.
