Lot Essay

Fougasse became the Art Editor of Punch in 1937 and the Editor from 1949-52, and is partly credited with modernising the image of the somewhat traditional paper. He was initially trained as an engineer and this may explain the graphic and concise quality of many of his drawings. He is perhaps best known for the series of posters he created during the Second World War entitled 'Careless Talk Costs Lives'.
