Compare the faces of Buddhas from two sites in Shandong province, at Toshan and Longtong, executed during the Sui dynasty, illustrated by O. Sirén, Chinese Sculpture from the Fifth to Fourteenth Century, London, 1925, pls. 348 and 356, respectively. The latter view in particular shows figures displaying the strong lateral striations resulting from severe weathering and water seepage within caves which the present lot exhibits, although its specific site location has yet to be determined.
