A PINKISH SANDSTONE BUDDHIST STELE
NORTHERN WEI DYNASTY, CIRCA 500-525
The rectangular slab carved on one side with a central figure of Buddha seated with hands in his lap atop a lotus base within an arched recess, flanked by two bodhisattvas standing beneath the heads of two birds with long necks that form the lower border of an ogee cartouche filled with scrolling leaf-form vapor issuing from a bottle, with apsaras in the upper corners, the lower section carved with two acolytes flanking a squatting Atlantean figure supporting a censer, the figures separated and framed by panels carved with inscriptions, with further donor figures and inscriptions in the recessed area below
