Lot Essay

John Ayers illustrates a similar bowl in The Baur Collection, vol. III, Geneva, 1972, no. A 474, where he proposes that "the occurence of the K'ang hsi reign mark on finely-made bowls and dishes having this rich purple glaze points to the likelihood of their having been made for Court use."
Other similar bowls have been included in various exhibitions: Chinesische Keramik, Meisterwerke aus Privatsammlungen, Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst, Köln, 1988, p. 168, no. 122; Splendour of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 9 June - 2 August 1992, p. 355, no. 222; and The Tsui Museum of Art, Chinese Ceramics IV; Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1995, no. 16, one of a pair later sold in these rooms, 22 March 1999, lot 319.
