Lot Essay

During the protectorate, Desborough served as an MP. Under Cromwell, he gained increasing prominence in Scotland's administration and was 'appointed his Highness's Council in Scotland, for the government of that nation'. He became keeper of the great seal of Scotland in 1655.(S. Wright, 'Desborough, Samuel (1619-1690)', Oxford DNB, Oxford, 2004; online edn., Jan 2008).
