The Old Testament story of Jonah (the Arabic Yunus) has god sending Jonah to preach to the city of Ninevah. When Jonah declined and fled by sea, a great storm came up and Jonah was put off the ship in fear, only to be swallowed by a whale. After three days, the whale spat him up, and he acceded and preached to the Ninevans. Although they repented, Jonah left the city for the shelter of a gourd tree in the desert, to wait for god to wreak vengeance on the city.

This little embroidered panel contains, from left, the stormy sea and the whale spitting Jonah onto the shore; Jonah sheltering under the gourd tree; and Jonah preaching to the king (in gilt) and people of Ninevah.
