Lot Essay

Eagle's Nest, Zennor, was the Heron family house from 1956. Olga was a close friend of Heron and they debated 'ways of painting' on a frequent basis. Many such conversations took place between them at Eagle's Nest.
Commenting on her series of landscapes for the 1978 exhibition Davenport states 'In front of the landscape today the modern artist is aware of a conflict between his subjective feelings about it and the detachment needed to create a work which will be a plastic object in its own right. In my present paintings I have tried to resolve this conflict and present a synthesis for myself using colour relationships to suggest space and form' (see Exhibition catalogue, Olga Davenport, Oxford, Oxford Gallery, February - March 1978).
