Willem Witsen (1860-1923)
A life-long Amsterdammer, also known as the 'painter of Amsterdam', Willem Witsen received his training from A. Allebé at the Rijks- Academie of Amsterdam. There he met and befriended amongst others Van Looy, Toorop, Breitner and Isaac Israels, who's work would all strongly influence Dutch late nineteenth century painting. As a student Witsen tried his hand at portraits and figure studies, but finally turned his attention to townviews of London and Amsterdam, for which he is most remembered. In 1885 Witsen co-founded the 'Nederlandse Etsclub' and called attention to contemporary graphic art. After his death in 1923 the artist was also recognized as a gifted fotographer.
