Nicolaas van der Waay (1855-1936)
Van der Waay was born in Amsterdam in 1855 and was a student of L.J.A. Koopman, A. Allebé and B. Wijnveld jr, who he succeeded as professor of the Academie in 1891. Like many artists he travelled to Italy in 1884 and copied old master paintings. The artist was especially known for his charming portrayal of ballerinas and orphan girls and was honoured with several decorations during his life. His pupils include A.H. Gouwe, H. Paulides, J.F. Sterre de Jong and J. Zoetelief Tromp. Van der Waay died at the age of eighty-one in Amsterdam.
