Willem de Zwart forms a link between the Hague- and Amsterdam School. De Zwart made use of themes that would associate him with his friend Breitner but he never failed for rustic subjects that were practised by his personal tutor Jacob Maris. His daring compositions and strong colours gradually distinguished his work from that of the Hague School.
