Isaac Israels was the only son of Jozef Israels. In 1871 the family moved to The Hague, where Isaac studied at the Art Academy from 1878-1880. His fellow students included Bauer, Breitner and Verster. In his sixteenth year he exhibited 'Practising the Signal' at the Exhibition of Living Masters, which was bought immediately by H.W. Mesdag. At first Israels like Breitner preferred military subjects. Later on he became interested in the modern life, life in streets, the cafes and the theaters. As his style became increasingly virtuoso and looser, he developed into Holland's leading impressionist.
