The cabinet, conceived in the George III fashion associated with Robert Adam and Thomas Sheraton, is richly inlaid with trompe l'oeil fluted pilasters and laurel-festooned tablets; while its figurative medallions include a tablet that evokes the poets Golden Age. The revived Adam style of the 1870s was reflected in the following decade by Messrs Hamptons and Schoolbreds catalogues; while Sheraton's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, of the 1790s was reissued in 1895.
