BAROLO RISERVA FROM THE CELLARS OF MARCHESI DI BAROLO

Offered in original wooden cases

The following lots have been specially selected by Marchesi di Barolo for this sale

By offering these wines for auction, Marchesi di Barolo is presenting a unique opportunity for the buyer to experience a range of Barolos spreading over a period of 50 years

The different vintages available in each lot demonstrate the evolution of wine making styles in the region and also the climatic differences between each vintage and how that affects the quality of the wine.

Up until the end of the 1970s Barolo was made in the 'traditional' style with wine makers looking for a natural and spontaneous fermentation without temperature control. This method would normally take about 3 months with the end result being a full-bodied, structured and long-lived wine. During the 1980s consumers demanded fresher, smoother and less oxidised wines which led to producers changing their wine making system, using selected yeasts and temperature-controlled fermantion to produce a fresher style of wine. The ageing of the wines in barrel was also reduced to a period of 18 to 24 months.

The first selection to be offered for sale demonstrate the contrast between the old wine making system (1958 and 1971) and the new (1985 and 1990). The second and third selections not only demonstrate the differences in wine-making but also the climatic differences between the vintages

The 1961 and 1964 vintages are both years that experienced hot summers while early rains in 1978 and 1989 led to a reduced harvest of well-ripened grapes which produced a high quality Barolo with great structure, balanced acidity and smoothness

The final mixed selection highlights three very distinctive vintages which were all characterised by rainy summers followed by warm autumns that led to wines that have aged magnificently

The cellars of Marchesi di Barolo are located in the village of Barolo, overlooking the castle of Marquis Falleti. Wines have been made under this name since 1800 and the winery was purchased in 1920 by Pietro Abbona and is currently still owned by the Abbona family.

All the wines offered for sale have been recorked and recapsuled
