Lot Essay

The poems included in this anthology belong to Mawlana Shahi, Mawlana Tusi, Hafiz Shirazi, Mawlana Salman, Sheikh Sa'di and others.

The album includes an extremely fine hilyeh (probably added when the manuscript was rebound), signed by Sheikh Suleyman Vehbi and dated AH 1249/1833-34 AD. It is noted in the signature that the calligrapher was a pupil of the famous Sevki Effendi (d. 1874 AD). The application of the hilyeh on calligraphic albums is rare and is indicative of the importance lavished on it by its 19th century owner.
