Falkener's paintings were not limited to quick observational sketches. He also produced more finished watercolours, as seen in the current work. In 1849, when Falkener returned to London after his travels, he devoted considerable time to making drawings for the restoration of ancient buildings. A selection of his drawings were exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Paris of 1855, where they were awarded a grand medal of honour.
