Lot Essay
These folios and that of the following lot, most probably come from an album compiled by (or in part compiled by) 'Asadullah Kirmani for Bayezid II (r. 1481-1512) or his father Mehmet II.
'Asadullah Kirmani, whose signature appears on the folios, was the teacher of Ahmad Qarahisari (d. 1556 AD), who was a calligrapher famous for his skill at composing a text on page and was one of the most prolific calligraphers working during the reign of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent (1520-1566 AD). Qarahisari often acknowledged his apprenticeship with 'Asadullah in his work. 'Asadullah's own work is previously unrecorded. One panel of calligraphy here (lot 135, recto of the non-illustrated folio) gives the complete name of the scribe - 'Asadullah son of Bayezid al-Sadiq al-Sufi al-Kirmani. Bayani records 'Asadullah as a calligrapher of thuluth, naskh and nasta'liq who died in AH 893/1487-88 AD (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va athar-e khosh-nevisan, vol. I, Tehran, 1348 sh., p.64).
The text on the present folios includes poems composed by his father, Bayezid. A verse mentions that he came from Bursa and was honoured by an un-named Sultan, probably Bayezid II or Mehmet II. A number of the verses mention both Bursa and 'Asadullah's father Bayezid, indicating that he was the composer of the poems. The recto of the non-illustrated folio of lot 135 contains a heading which reads 'the handwriting of Bayezid Kirmani'. Although no text follows, it is likely that 'Asadullah intended to paste in an example of his fathers handwriting.
