Lot Essay

Although this pattern has a covering effect that is reminiscent of textiles, tiles with repeated medallions decorated with feathery tulips on a ground of flowering prunus branches can be found, inter alia, in the Mosque of Takieci Ibrahim Aga (1592) in Istanbul. Three panels of identical tiles are in the Metropolitan Museum (no. MMA 17.190.2083; J.M. Rogers, Islamic Art & Design 1500 - 1700, London, 1983, p.96), in the Musée des arts décoratifs (Purs décors? Arts de l'Islam, regards du XIXème siècle, exhibition catalogue Paris, 2007, p. 140) and the Qatar National Museum (previously Sotheby's, 25 April 1990, lot 432).
