The Khalwati order is said to have been found by Pir Umar Khalwati in the 14th century in Herat. The tariqa was probably introduced later to Anatolia in the early 15th century by Muhammad Shams al-Din (d. 1439), know as Amir Sultan, who migrated from Bukhara to Bursa. The Khalwati sufi order further became one of the most prominent tariqas of the Ottoman empire.
