SIGNED MUHAMMAD SHAFI AL-HUSAYNI AND MURTAZA QULI SHAMLU, SAFAVID IRAN, CIRCA 1650
Persian manuscript on paper, 5ff. plus four fly-leaves, in black shikasteh within cloud-bands reserved on gold ground, the first folio with 10ll. of shikasteh within diagonal panels divided in two columns, on gold ground, surrounded by bands of elegant floral scrolls in gold and polychrome, each of the following folios with various arrangement of panels and columns, within black rules and gold and orange frames, empty panels with finely gold speckled ground, the first folio signed Muhammad Shafi' al-Husayni in the Royal Library, other folios with the signature of Murtada Quli Shamlu, dated 29 Sha'ban AH 1056 (10 October 1646) and 5 Sha'ban AH 1057 (2 December 1647), creasing, some reinforcement, later lacquer binding with damages

Lot Essay

The first page was copied in the Royal Library, possibly of Shah 'Abbas II (1052-77/1642-66) by Muhammad Shafi' al-Husayni who is referred to by the most famous shikasteh scribe 'Abd al-Majid, as his master.

The others were copied by Murtaza Quli Shamlu, two in the Capital Isfahan dated 1056 (AD 1646-7) and 29 Sha'ban 1056 (10 October 1646) and another two dated 1057 (AD 1647-8) and 5 Sha'ban 1057 (2 December 1647).
