Arabic manuscript on paper, 348ff. plus 4 fly-leaves, each folio with 14ll. of bold black naskh in clouds reserved against gold ground, text panels between gold and blue rules, and folios with gold outer rules, catchwords, small red naskh inscription in the upper left hand corner indicating the sura, sura headings in gold on red or blue ground cusped cartouches filled with gold scrolling vine and surrounded by gold and polychrome floral illumination, commentary throughout in the margins written in shikasteh in clouds reserved against gold within ogival cartouches with foliate terminals, marginal medallions marking juz', hizb and nisf hizb, opening bifolio with dense gold and polychrome illumination framing 6ll. of text, colophon signed Muhammad Shaf'i and dated 1260, following folio with gilt floral medallion and spandrels within the text frame, in elegant lacquer binding with central medallion, spandrels and border filled with arabesques on a yellow ground with spiralling vine, doublures with gilt medallion and spandrels on plain yellow ground

Lot Essay

The scribe Muhammad Shaf'i was a prominent Tabrizi calligrapher of naskh. His recorded works are dated between AH 1217 and 1262 (1802-1849 AD), and are religious texts or calligraphic folios (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va asar-e khosh-nevisan, vol.IV, Tehran, 1358 sh., pp. 163-5).
