The winged Cupid with the lion is emblematic for love, and relates to the notion that 'love conquers all', drawn from Ovid and Virgil. Various related models are known, all featuring Cupid riding Apollo's chariot and mostly embellished with Love attributes, therefore this model is generally described as pendule au char de l'Amour. Further related chariot clocks are illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de La Pendule Française, Paris, 1997, p.415-421.
