The present composition is a reduced version of the state portrait (194 x 134.2 cm.) in the Schloss Wilhelmsthal near Kassel. A third portrait (86 x 71 cm.), however full-length, is in a private collection, (for both see A.-Ch. Flohr, Johann Heinrich Tischbein der Ältere (1722- 1789) als Porträtmaler, Munich, 1997, pp. 187-8, nos. G43-4).

The present sitter wears an wristband bearing a miniature portrait of her husband Count Friedrich II of Hessen Kassel. Tischbein has painted over twenty portraits of the Count.
