The design of this service has traditionally been attributed to the Swedish artist Christian Precht, whose related designs for his patron Count Axel Sparre are known. The Grill family was active in the Swedish trade, which flourished in the 1740-1805 period, when they ordered at least six different services. See D. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, London, 1978, p. 447, plate 545.
