Lot Essay

The original painting, from which the engraving 'La Coquette' was taken, is by Antoine Watteau and is in The Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. The engraving shows the scene in reverse, but the scene on the Chinese porcelain is depicted as in the painting. See D. F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chine de Commande, Lochem, 1989, fig. 187b for Thomassin's engraving which is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and fig. 187a, a teabowl and saucer in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam. Also see D.S. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, London, 1994, no. 177, p. 161 for a spoon-tray. A milk-jug with this design was sold in our London Rooms, 13 May 2008, lot 290.
