The design of the 'Neptune' bowl, cover and stand is after a drawing by Abraham Bloemaert (1564-1651), later engraved by his son Frederick who died in 1669. Further examples are illustrated in D.S. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, Vol. I, pl. 336 and F. and N. Hervouët and Y. Bruneau, La Porcelaine des compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, p. 294, pl. 13.11.
