chiaroscuro woodcut printed from two blocks in black and slate, circa 1518, a good impression of this rare print, trimmed fractionally into the subject above and below and approximately 10 mm. at right, some whitish discolouration in places, a horizontal and vertical central fold, some unobtrusive foxmarks, the sheet laid onto an old album sheet along the edges, a few short tears and other, minor defects along the sheet edges

Lot Essay

Bartsch considered this to be a reversed copy of the original by da Carpi. However, Dr Caroline Karpinski, author of the new edition of Bartsch's Italian Chiaroscuro Woodcuts (Vol. 48), believes the present print is in fact the authentic version executed by da Carpi.
