The table's form derives from a pattern for a harlequin writing/dressing table (with rising writing compartments) published by Thomas Shearer in The Cabinet-Makers' London Book of Prices (1788), a trade manual 'calculated for the convenience of cabinet-makers' (see C. Gilbert, 'A Shearer Harlequin Table and its Design', Furniture History, 1966, pp. 40-42, pl. XXI).
