Lot Essay

The dizzying sculpturality of these splendid stands, which almost seem to defy gravity, could point to a Venetian origin. A related stand at Ca' Rezzonico, Venice, with a similar sense of fluidity, but carved with grapevines rather than putti, is illustrated in E. Colle, Il Mobile Rococo in Italia, Milan, 2003, p. 346.
