Lot Essay

Interestingly, the giltwood plinths for these torchères are carved with heraldry for Pope Leo XIII (b. 1810), who succeeded the Papacy in 1878 until his death in 1903. Circa 1920 these torchères entered a private European family collection and were passed thence by descent.
