Lacking the large folding geological map. 56 plates and maps, of which 12 are handcoloured geological profiles or views. Text illustrations throughout. (A few of the paiaeontological plates with occasional spotting.) Recent half leather, original wrappers bound in (wrappers spotted and lightly soiled). 'PROBABLY THE GREATEST WORK EVER TO BE PUBLISHED EMBODYING THE RESULTS OF A SINGLE PIECE OF ORIGINAL RESEARCH BY ONE MAN. This work detailed and established practically the whole succession of the stratigraphical formations and their fossil contents (and associated igneous rocks) of what we now know as the Ordovician and Silurian systems, in their type areas' (Challinor p.108). MANTELL, Gideon Algernon (1790-1852). The Geology of the South-East of England. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green & Longman, 1833. 8° (222 x 140mm). Half-title. Lithographic frontispiece and five lithographic plates, one of which folding, hand-coloured folding engraved map, woodcut title vignette and 68 text illustrations. (Map torn along folds but without loss, lacking the subscribers list pp. v-vi as usual.) Modern half calf in antique style, gilt spine. FIRST EDITION of Mantell's third book containing THE FIRST EVER DESCRIPTION OF AN ARMOURED DINOSAUR, Hylaeosaurus. Discovered by Mantell in 1832, he proves conclusively in this book that it was a land dweller (his previous discovery of lguanodon was hitherto assumed to be mainly aquatic) . 'Also notable is its attempt ... to reconstruct the environment in which the Iguanodon had lived' (Dean 1998, p.22) Dean 97.
