Lithographic frontispiece and five lithographic plates, one of which folding, hand-coloured folding engraved map, woodcut title vignette and 68 text illustrations. (Map torn along folds but without loss, lacking the subscribers list pp. v-vi as usual.) Modern half calf in antique style, gilt spine. FIRST EDITION of Mantell's third book containing THE FIRST EVER DESCRIPTION OF AN ARMOURED DINOSAUR, Hylaeosaurus. Discovered by Mantell in 1832, he proves conclusively in this book that it was a land dweller (his previous discovery of lguanodon was hitherto assumed to be mainly aquatic) . 'Also notable is its attempt ... to reconstruct the environment in which the Iguanodon had lived' (Dean 1998, p.22) Dean 97.
