This jar was possibly made for funerary use. Although found in Britain, it could well have been imported from the continent. For a cinerary urn of identical form, now in Koblenz Museum, cf. J. Morin-Jean, La verrerie en Gaule sous l'Empire Romain, Paris, 1913, p. 50, fig. 24. For a jug with similar body, found near Cologne, and now in the Römisch-Germanisches Museum in Cologne, cf. O. Doppelfeld, Römisches und Fränkisches Glas in Köln, Köln, 1966, no. 21; and D. B. Harden et al., Masterpieces of Glass, British Museum, London, 1968, p. 83, no. 109, for a handled flagon with similar ribbing found in a grave in Kent.
