Lot Essay

The above stele would have been made for a Greek resident of Egypt. The jackals, representative of the god Anubis, recall earlier Egyptian tradition. For a similar example, cf. Late Egyptian and Coptic Art, Brooklyn Museum, New York, 1943, p. 17, pl. 12.
