Lot Essay

Employing everyday objects such as clothes pins and items of clothing, Tammam Azzam creates texture and dimension in his enigmatic compositions
that speak of negative and positive space. These ordinary objects create a
framework around which Azzam creates highly textured compositions, sometimes
clothes pins are holding white sheets in place, in another they are used as
templates. While these objects are used to generate a distinct abstract expressionist feel, in which the emphasis is on the tactical application of
medium, Azzams compositions simultaneously recall the sharp lines, dramatic
peaks and vivid sensations of surfaces found in nature. The result is
canvases inspired both by the rugged volcanic terrain of Azzams native Suwieda southern Syria, but at the same time recall clothes lines in densely
packed urban settings.
