Lot Essay

Joos de Momper was one of the most popular and important landscape painters in the Netherlands of the first quarter of the seventeenth century.
The present work is a fine example of the detailed mountainous landscapes for which the artist was famed, and which earned him the sobriquet 'pictor montium' beneath his portrait in Van Dyck's Iconography (c. 1632-44).
