The present work is based on Bedoli's celebrated composition in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich. The figure of Saint Bruno, standing behind the Madonna under an open doorway, has been replaced with a sinuous Italian landscape. Of the numerous copies of the Munich picture this version is unusual in the fine rendering of the Madonna's bejewelled headdress.
