Lot Essay

Johann Careel is recorded as working in Nuremberg from 1760-1780. The present paintings are related to a pair of still lifes of similar dimensions sold at the Feilding sale, Christie's, 1 July 1938, lot 65, and to another pair (also on paper laid down on canvas) sold at Sotheby's, London, 6 December 2007, lot 218. Two gouaches by Careel are in the collection of the Städtische Graphische Sammlung in Nuremberg.
