with John Smith, London, 1842, and sold in 1843 to the widow of Coungham[?].
By descent from the mother of the present owner.

Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Bernhard Schnackenburg for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph. He dates the picture to circa 1633, considering it one of the most important works from the early years of the artist's career (private correspondence, 3 March 2009).
