Jan van der Haagen was a member of a Dutch family of ship painters, known to have studied under van de Velde, who worked in England and Ireland between circa 1670 and circa 1740.
We are grateful to Michael Naxton for suggesting that the man-o-war in the background of this portrait is probably that of a triumphant admiral involved in one of the great naval victories of Queen Anne's reign, and also likely to be the sitters' father.
