Lot Essay

This painting follows the composition first deployed by Guido Reni in an oil on copper now in the Château de Versailles (Louvre inv. no. 529).

This lot is sold with a copy of a certificate by Dr. D. Stephen Pepper, dated 31 October 1991, stating his view that it is a fully autograph work by Guido Reni of circa 1634-5, revising his opinion of 1984.
