Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Stefania Mason for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs. The Latin inscription abbreviates verse 4 of the 41st Psalm, 'Domine, miserere mei: sana animam meam, quoniam peccavi tibi' ('O Lord, have mercy upon me: heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee').
