PROBABLY WÜRZBURG, MID-18TH CENTURY
Carved throughout with flowers and foliage and rockwork, with a shaped back, padded scrolled carved arms and a serpentine seat upholstered à chassis, the tapestry depicting bouquets of flowers framed by acanthus, on cabriole legs and scrolled feet, stencilled to the underside '13'

Lot Essay

The vigorous carving and exaggerated form of this chair are strongly indicative of Würzburg, where the spectacular interiors of The Residenz exerted so great an influence on the decorative arts of southern Germany. Among similar chairs, one was sold from the stock-in-trade of Maurice Segoura, Christie's, New York, 19 October 2006, lot 99.
