Lot Essay

The scrolled open pediment adorned with gilt-decorated floral trails, foliate-engraved plate to the cresting and arc-en-arbalète lower section count among the features which relate this cabinet to mid-18th Century Venetian examples (G. Morazzoni, Il Mobile Veneziano del Settecento, Vol. II, Milan, 1958, Tav. CCCLXVIII-XXIII). Among related bureaux-cabinets sold at auction, two examples featuring similar foliate-engraved central plates were sold anonymously, Sotheby's, New York, 20 March 1998, lot 315 ($48,875 with premium), and Sotheby's, London, 16 December 1998, lot 163 (£51,000 with premium), respectively; while a third related example was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 11 December 2002, lot 45 (£28,680 with premium).
