These vigorously-carved large porphyry lidded vases are reminiscent of the covered vases à godrons torses in the Musée du Louvre, Paris and illustrated in P. Malgouyres and C. Blanc-Riehl, Porphyre, exh. cat., Paris, 2003, p.113, no.27 (OA9214) and p.141, no.48 (OA9213), respectively). Among closely related examples sold at auction, a pair of spirally-carved covered porphyry urns was sold anonymously, Tajan, Paris, 18 December 2007, lot 56 (EUR 35,937 with premium), another sold from the Collection of Ingrao, Sotheby's, New York, 20 October 2006, lot 159 ($60,000 with premium), while a further related pair was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 12 December 2002, lot 139.
