Man Ray was introduced to Juliet through a mutual friend, Elsa Combe-Martin, at a time of great personal and professional soul-searching. Far from the Paris that he loved so much, Man Ray headed west from New York in need of escape, and found himself in Hollywood at the end of the summer of 1940. Man Ray was said to be intrigued by Juliet's exotic features, expressive mannerisms and her dancer's figure. These drawings document this period - the beginning of a great love affair and inspiration to the American pioneer of Surrealism.
